Learning Communities 2010/11
Kings Hedges Learning Community
Kings Hedges is situated in north Cambridge. Work started on developing Kings Hedges Learning Community in April 2010. The first quarter of the project was mainly spent consulting residents, community groups and other local partners and providers to identify what was happening in Kings Hedges and what was needed. It became apparent from an early stage that in comparison with other Learning Communities, there were many social activities, clubs and learning opportunities readily available. By working in partnership with the community, results from a learning survey gave a clear indication of the training needs of residents which enabled things to get off to a flying start. By December 2010, among other courses, forty four residents received free training and qualifications in Food Safety.
Oxmoor Learning Community
CPLT have been working with residents on the Oxmoor Estate in Huntingdon since 2009 to improve access to local learning opportunities. A Key element of this work has been the recruitment of local residents to act as Learning Champions.
The Learning Champions work with organisations that provide courses in the area and help promote learning opportunities directly to local residents. They have attended many of the courses themselves and use their own experiences to help new learners overcome any barriers they have to taking part in the activities on offer. In addition, through their steering group, they are able to help providers coordinate activities to minimise event clashes and gain information about which courses are likely to be popular.
